The Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, is probably the most common status of residence obtained by foreign nationals to work in Japan. It is acquired by individuals who will be engaged in work requiring specialized skills meeting a prescribed standard that is based on knowledge of the sciences or arts or requiring the concepts or thought process of a foreign person.

Some examples could be a someone working as a system engineer, in planning or finance, as a translator or interpreter or in international marketing.

In order to obtain an Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, an applicant must meet the following requirements.

  1. Will be engaged in specialized work based on knowledge of the arts or sciences
  2. Have graduated from a four year university degree program majoring in a field applicable to the type of work to be performed, or has over 10 years of practical work experience
  3. Will be receiving a salary comparable to a Japanese worker performing similar work
